Landscape Concept, Planting Plans

Location: Karikari Grove, Waikanae

Client: Kapiti Views Trust

Hudson Associates was engaged by Kapiti Views Trust to prepare landscape concept, which based on the principle of using the natural features of the site in a manner that enhances the amenity of the subdivision for the residents and also utilizes the landscape features of the area.

One such feature is the water that flows across the site. Some of this water is sources from the large hillside catchment above the site, while other sources of water include existing springs adjacent to or within the site. By creating ponds, meanders, low flow channels around weirs, a rain garden retention pond, and roadway median swale, the route of the water is traced and landscape features developed along each step of its way through the site.

It is proposed to green the waterways and water features by planting trees within and adjacent to them, thereby highlighting their presence and path. Both active and passive recreation reserves are proposed, with children’s play equipment planned for the former, which is to be located in a publicly visible area near the turn-around at the head of the lower street. A public walkway is also planned to pass through the reserve beside the children’s playground, enhancing safety and emphasising the central location of the play area and its accessibility. Access from the upper parts of the subdivision will be via a zig-zag walkway, which links to the lower road and provides a quick walking route from Kakariki Grove to Elizabeth Street.
